Going Back To School as a Mom? Here’s What You Should Know

Being a mum and going back to school is not easy. Here are some tips to get you closer to an ideal work-life balance.

1. Let go of the guilt
Rather than dwelling on how you don’t get enough time to be with your kids, think about how going back to school will benefit your family. Attending college will bring many opportunities along your way. Once you get your degree, you will qualify for higher paying jobs, and can consequently offer higher living standards to your little one. Accept that you will have both good and bad days. Know that you are not alone and get someone to talk to when you feel overwhelmed.

2. Make your mornings easier
Avoid starting the day on a confused note by getting organized the previous night. Pack your kid’s snacks and lunches. Also, decide what you wish to make for breakfast and prepare the ingredients. Pack your work and school bags and place them by the door.

3. Find quality childcare
Nothing can be more frustrating to a mum than not having someone to care for her children. That is why you need a reliable childcare provider before you join school. Consider asking for recommendations from friends and family. Interview the babysitter and make sure they are comfortable with all your terms and schedule. You can also have a backup plan in case the babysitter doesn’t turn up.

4. Stay connected during the day
Stay in touch with your children even when you are far apart. Moms with younger kids can record a video and send it to the caregiver. This ensures that your kids feel your presence and it gets rid of your anxiety.

5. Spend time with your partner
No matter how busy your schedule is, don’t neglect your partner. Chances are that he or she is your closet support system, so make them feel loved. Set aside at least one evening for a monthly date. It doesn’t have to be costly; you can make it an indoor one while the kids are away.
